In our society, literacy is necessary in order to function in everyday life, to be successful academically, and to perform adequately in most jobs. For many people, reading is also a valuable form of entertainment. Yet learning to read is extremely difficult. Unlike the ability to see, hear, speak, or comprehend language, there is no one specific portion or process of the brain that is devoted to the ability to read. Reading is necessarily a learned ability, and one that requires multiple cognitive skills.

For this reason, a child is best equipped to learn to read, and to gain all of the skills and enjoyment that come with reading, if the adults in his or her life are well informed about how reading works. Children’s Literacy Under One Hour will give you an overview on the concepts that will be helpful to you if you are working towards teaching a child to read or encouraging a child who is already starting to read. This book includes information that is relevant to children as early as infancy and as old as elementary school.
